The body needs sleep to function properly in all areas, including the immune system, tissue repair, pain management, cardiovascular health, cognitive function, and learning and memory. Sleep disturbances happen to people of all ages and in those who have a variety of conditions that are typically treated by physical therapists.

All life stages and a variety of diagnoses and conditions can cause sleep disruptions, which are typically treated by rehabilitation professionals. Sleep is a biological requirement for healthy development, wellbeing, and health. Numerous chronic health conditions, such as hypertension, diabetes, depression, and obesity, are all made worse by a lack of sleep. Lack of sleep hinders recovery and is linked to higher cancer and early mortality risks. Low levels of physical activity, difficulties with daily tasks (such as work or school), and negative psychosocial and behavioural outcomes are all signs of even mild sleep deprivation.

Although getting enough good-quality sleep is important for overall health, little is known about how sleep affects recovery and the accomplishment of rehabilitation and habilitation goals.
